The Faculty of Engineering of Polessky State University opened its doors to active and talented young people. At the Department of Linguistics and Professional Communication, high school students were able to experience the atmosphere of student life even before the entrance exams, by taking part in the republican project “Become a student translator for one day.” A rich program was organized for the high school students, which allowed them not only to see the university from the inside but also to become part of its academic life for a few hours. The day’s program was varied and informative. Students of the specialty “Linguistic Support for Intercultural Communications” held a presentation of the specialty and an engaging linguistic quiz for the applicants. Then the students went on a tour of the building and the university, where they were able to assess the modern educational environment.
The guests met with the head of the Department of Linguistics and Professional Communication, Olga Fedorovna Zhilevich, and the teaching staff, and visited modern classrooms and specialized offices. The schoolchildren were able to ask all the questions they were interested in about admission and studying not only to the mentors but also to the students, who were happy to share their impressions and advice.
Of particular interest was the masterclass on Chinese calligraphy, which was conducted by the senior lecturer of the department, Ekaterina Vasilyevna Piskun, together with the students. The schoolchildren not only learned about the intricacies of Eastern writing but also tried their hand at writing characters. In addition, future applicants attended a class on the practical phonetics of the English language. This allowed them to experience the real rhythm of the educational process and understand how classes in specialized disciplines are structured.
The “Become a Student for a Day” project gives high school students a unique opportunity to glimpse into the future, make a conscious choice of their future profession, and see that Polessky State University is a territory of opportunities for active and goal‑oriented young people.
