Roundtable "Concept Education Development in the Field of Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection Culture in the Brest Region"

On April 8, 2021, Polessky State University hosted a roundtable “Concept for the Development of Education in the Field of Nuclear Safety Culture and Radiation Protection in the Brest Region” within the framework of the project “EU best practices-based education in Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Culture for the Belarusian Academia” (RADIUM). It is funded by the European Education and Culture Executive Agency within the framework of the Erasmus+ programme.

The meeting was attended by experts of the project working group and representatives of educational institutions, real economy, health care based in Pinsk and other cities of Belarus. The guests from “Pinsk City Department of Emergency Situations”, “Pinsk veterinary station”, “Pinsk Center for Standardization, Metrology and Certification”, Pinsk City and District Inspectorate of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection, LLC “Technopark Polesie” and a representative of the UNDP Belarus were present.

RADIUM project, implemented by Polessky State University in the Brest region was presented at the meeting. The issues of personnel training, the current state and directions of development of radiation protection and nuclear safety in the Brest region and the Republic of Belarus as a whole were discussed. The participants of the roundtable were presented with a new specialty “Nuclear and Radiation Safety”, which will be opened as a result of the RADIUM project implementation.

Master's degree training in this specialty will be conducted by 6 universities of the Republic of Belarus together with universities of the European Union within the framework of a network university. The model is considered unique for Belarus.

Following the results of the roundtable, the relevance of the specialty being opened in the conditions of dynamically developing nuclear energy and nuclear technologies in Belarus was noted, as well as constructive proposals were made for making changes to the master's degree program in order to increase the competitiveness and demand for master's degree graduates in various sectors of the country's economy.
